I am a slave to my iPhone, so much so, that I continue to use it even though I absolutely get no reception in my downtown Berkeley office. However, slave though I may be, I’m not so unprofessional that I would actually use it for a client call or a training webinar. Instead I’ll use my Skype account and a custom phone number. Skype has actually gotten much better over the years. Remember that three second gap that used to occur every time someone spoke? ”You Go”, “no you go”, “wait, what?” , “never mind”.
However, Skype may have a competitor, at least for 2011, because Google is offering free US and Canadian calling using Gmail chat. All you need is a computer with a built in or plugged in microphone and the Google Voice and Video plug in and you are set!
I’ve created a video to demonstrate how to use this feature. I think my favorite part is that I just click a phone number in an email and the dialer pops up in my Gmail mailbox. If you watch my training videos, you know that I’m a sucker for getting additional business functionality without ever having to leave my Gmail tab.
